A sandwichis a food that is usually composed of vegetables, sliced cheese or meat, placed on or between slices of bread or, more generally, a dish in which two or more pieces of bread serve as an envelope, packaging for another type of food. The sandwich started as a portable food for the fingers in the western world, although, over time, it has become widespread throughout the world. Sandwiches are a popular type of food for lunch, work, school or picnics to eat as part of a lunch. The bread can be simple or covered with seasonings such as mayonnaise or mustard, to improve its flavor and texture. In addition to being homemade, sandwiches are also sold in restaurants and can be served hot or cold. There are salty sandwiches, such as delicate sandwiches and sweet sandwiches, such as a peanut butter sandwich and jelly. The sandwich is considered to have been named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, inventor, of this combination of food. The Wall Street Journal described it as “Great Britain’s greatest contribution to gastronomy”.
